He wants me

he wants me to lose weight

how dare he

he is suppose to love me regardless

he is suppose to love me unconditionally

as I am his mate

he hasn’t said it

he doesn’t want to offend

but I can read between the lines

of his comments

his sarcastic pen

I was this size when we met

time hasn’t been kind

ok I have put a few pounds here and there

that would be father time

he has taken to hiding food

restricting what I eat

it isn’t as if I can’t touch my toes

or I can’t see my feet

how did we come to this?

I began to comfort eat

now there is no comfort in this food

they’re are no longer treats

My hair does not define me

it makes me more of me

my hair challenges you

it offends you

it stares you in the face

how dare I not straighten

am I really part of this Black race?

you believe I am lazy

as I do not conform

making my hair lay flat

I understand is the norm

you believe I am a disgrace

as you are forced to look at my face

without the asian locks

hiding my nubian traits

so I do not spend hours

at the hairdressers

sitting in a chair

listening to the gossip

while they take texture and flare

I am not affected by the media

and what you want me to be

and men who don't look at me

are shallow and simply not for me

this is not how I chose to spend my money

buying perms and tracks

as they play on your insecurities

and laugh behind your backs

#269 Random act of violence

They call it ‘Random acts of violence’

when there is no cause

my car was sitting peacefully

when it happened

in the middle of the night

I blame everyone

including myself

how could I be so forgetful

so absent minded

leaving my car out at night

by itself

they broke the glass

and rummaged within

I felt violated and mortified

about what they found

they said I was lucky

because nothing they stole

they took my comfort

of knowing that my car was safe

well not no more

I blamed everyone

including myself

my neighbours for not letting me know

how terrible this area had become

the insurance company

said I had to pay

explain why we have insurance anyway

my car drove around

humiliated and wounded

with a makeshift bandaid

oh the humiliation

now everyone knew of the violation
